She was working on a Fulbright Grant in the Philippines this summer and passed away there on August 4. She received great medical care, surrounded by friends from her scholarship program. She will be remembered for her dedication to education, her deep love of her students and her great intellect. The Berkeley High School Health Center has been notified and counseling is available at 664-6965. We are currently in the process of setting up a BHS memorial service once classes begin, and Kalpna's family has planned a memorial service on Saturday, August 9th, in Los Altos. Additional information on the service can be found on the family's memorial website . The family has asked that no flowers be sent; instead a foundation has been set up in Kalpna's name through the Berkeley High School Development Group. Donations can be sent to *BHSDG, P.O. Box 519, Berkeley CA 94701-0519*, with *Kalpna Mistry Memorial* on the memo line. Message-ID: <185947.3598.qm@web45114.mail.sp1.yahoo.com> BIHS Parents - its critically important that the BIHS program have representation on the two committees described below.? Serving on one of these committees provides you with unique insight into how all of Berkeley High operates.? Please consider running for one of the open positions, and submit your name for nomination by September 4th.? If you aren't able to submit your materials by that date, but are interested, you can also participate as a write-in candidate at the September 9th meeting.? Because these are elected positions, and only in-person votes count, please plan to attend the September 9th PTSA meeting. ****************** PTSA:? BSEP & SGC Candidates Urgently Needed! ? Welcome to all our new incoming families and welcome back to all our returning families!? We hope everyone had a great summer and is ready for a great year at BHS.? For the first time ever, all students at Berkeley High are a part of six distinct small schools & programs.? We also hope everyone is surviving the first few days of school as such issues as class assignments, class size and other details get sorted out.? But outside of a few paperwork issues, we hope you are all transitioning nicely back into school mode. ? There are two important issues for everyone to be aware of: ? 1)? The First PTSA Meeting of the Year will take place on Tuesday, September 9th from 7 to 9 PM in The Little Theater.? There will be a lot of information on the upcoming year given out.? As well as the elections for the School Governance Council (SGC), the BSEP committee and the PTSA board and a question and answer session with principal Jim Slemp, this meeting is also absolutely the best way to get caught up on what is happening with the PTSA, SGC, block scheduling, advisories, teacher contract negotiations, the State Education Budget and everything else going on at Berkeley High.? We hope to see you there! ? 2) We Very Much Need Candidates for the BSEP and SGC Committees!? Due to a blunder on my part, the following information on the School Governance Council (SGC) and the Berkeley Schools Excellence Project (BSEP), and how to volunteer for them, fell between the cracks in preparing the Summer Newsletter.? I sincerely apologize.? We absolutely need people to volunteer for these very important committees.?? The School Governance Council, the BSEP committee and the PTSA all make important decisions and work on projects that positively impact our students' high school experience.? I encourage as many of you as possible to get involved with these committees -- it's a great experience on many levels.? In a nutshell: ? The SGC deals with many programmatic issues that have a definite impact on the academic program at Berkeley High. ? The BSEP Committee determines the use of a large amount of money that can be used in a variety of ways to support?our teachers and students. ? The elections for the coming school year for electing parent representatives to the School Site Council (SSC) and for the Berkeley Schools Excellence Project Committee (BSEP) will be held on Tuesday, September 9th at the first PTSA meeting of the new school year..? These organizations need parents and guardians who represent the entire spectrum of the Berkeley High School community.? All current and incoming BHS parents and guardians are eligible to serve and to vote!? The time to declare your candidacy is now! ? If you would like to run for SGC, BSEP (or PTSA), please email a brief personal statement (no more than 200 words) to PTSA President, Mark van Krieken, at markvk4 at comcast.netby next Thursday, September 4th.? Explain what office you are running for and why you are interested in serving in this position.? Please include your phone number and address so that the PTSA can contact you -- this information will not be made public.? Alternatively, you may mail or hand-deliver your statement to BHS PTSA, 1980 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA 94704, Attn: Elections.? If you would like to run for SGC, please also include your neighborhood category (if known) and the program(s) or school(s) at Berkeley High in which your child or children are enrolled. ? All names submitted for election by September 5th will be published on the BHS etree the following week and posted along with the candidates' statements on the PTSA website on that date or as soon thereafter as possible. ?Names and statements will also be printed and distributed at the September 9th meeting.? All names submitted in advance will appear on the printed ballot for elections.? Individuals may also run as write-in candidates by attending the meeting on September 9th and declaring their candidacy. ? For more information, visit the PTSA website: or contact Mark van Krieken, PTSA President at markvk4 at comcast.net. ? Best wishes for a great start to the schoolyear, ? My expertise in financial management coupled with my volunteer experience in school governance, in the classroom, and in community organizations will provide additional strength and a fresh perspective to the School Board. I improved fiscal systems in a community organization that helps homeless families and youth. I helped establish a nonprofit that brought a successful writing coach program to Berkeley secondary school students. These experiences convinced me of the urgent need to address the achievement gap in a sustained, thoughtful and systematic way. As School Board Director, I will: ? Achievement: make significant gains in closing the achievement gap by supporting and strengthening programs that work in raising literacy and math proficiency levels for all students. ? Facilities: make construction of adequate classrooms (especially at Berkeley High) and school facilities throughout the District a top priority to enable a quality educational experience. ? Teachers: ensure that teachers have the tools and support to fulfill their educational mission. ? Community: encourage and use input from the community to better target educational solutions, and increase board responsiveness to community concerns. ? Fiscal transparency: improve school board accountability for spending decisions and fiscal management. Ensure that scarce resources are allocated effectively and efficiently. Visit my website for more information on the Measure AA school bond and Berkeley High classrooms. Let?s make sure that school resources deliver the greatest educational benefit for all our students. Message-ID: <224295.21767.qm@web45113.mail.sp1.yahoo.com> PLEASE DO NOT REPLY to the etree, contact Mark van Krieken [markvk4 at comcast.net] Tuesday night, December 2, at 7:00 PM at St. Joseph the Worker Church, at 1640 Addison Street in Berkeley, Principal Jim Slemp will be hosting the second of two public forums for informing the BHS community on the proposed academic changes for Berkeley High. We cannot encourage you strongly enough to attend. The Berkeley High School administration is proposing significant changes for the High School and all parents owe it to themselves (and to the school community) to attend tomorrow night's meeting and get completely familiarized with what is being recommended. Over the past year, the BHS Redesign Committee (a group of consultants, BHS staff & teachers, a parent and a student) have been exploring various possibilities for addressing the achievement gap at Berkeley High and how to better address the needs of all of our students. The committee's recommendations were initially made public two weeks ago, at a School Governance Council meeting on Tuesday, November 18th. They were then presented the following night to the BUSD School Board by Principal Slemp, with the first public forum having been held this past Monday before Thanksgiving. As we mentioned in an earlier etree posting, the main proposed changes are: 1) The formation of a new, 7th small school at BHS. The school would begin in the fall of 2010. 2) The creation of advisories -- two 30 minute advisory periods each week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The advisories would start in the fall of 2009. A curriculum has not yet been developed. 3) A four-by-four block scheduling format would be implemented, starting in the fall of 2009. The schedule would be alternating days of periods one through four on one day and periods five through eight the next. 4) Student Support & Community Access Periods: Students taking six classes in the current schedule format would take six classes in the new format with one period per day free to pursue a variety of options (to be explained at tomorrow night's meeting) - both off-campus and on-campus possibilities have been mentioned. A major result of the proposal is the reduction of instructional time in each subject class by 25.5%. The current schedule has students attending six 55 minute classes per day, or 1650 minutes per week (1630 when accounting for one late start day per month). The new format would have a student with the same class schedule taking three 90 minute classes on Mondays and Fridays, three 80 minute classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and three 65 minute classes on Wednesdays (every Wednesday would be a late start day). This would give a total of 1215 minutes of instructional time per week, or a drop of 25.5%. When adding the two 30 minute advisories in, the reduction of overall instructional time is 22%. How the extra time is to be spent by students and by teachers is best heard at the meeting. For a complete copy of the Design Committee's proposal, please visit Design Committee's recommendationson the BIHS website. There are lots of opinions about many aspects of the proposal and its potential impact on Berkeley High's students. All parents need to make a strong effort to get informed and be as knowledgeable as possible about the current debate. Once again, the forum is Tuesday night, December 2nd at 7:00 PM at St. Joseph the Worker Church, at 1640 Addison Street in Berkeley. We Hope To See You There! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... For questions or additional information contact Donna Jaffe at djaffe at pkpress.com? To the families of all 9th grade BIHS students ? a permission slip was sent home with your student this Wednesday for a field trip to the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco taking place on Thursday, December 11. Please be sure to read the attached letter, complete this permission slip, have your student bring a check with the permission slip, and have your student get the teacher?s signatures he or she needs for the classes he or she will be missing. The school group has received group rates for BART and the museum entrance, but there is still a cost for the field trip. Checks can be made to the Berkeley High School Development Group. We are asking $7.00-$10.00 per student in order to cover the costs for all students, including those who are unable to pay. Please be generous. And complete those permissions slips and have your student return them by December 10. Thanks! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
