The BIHS Parent Action Group (PAG) is working to raise money through the Berkeley High School Development Group (BHSDG) to purchase a portable computer lab for our students. As you know, Berkeley High School has six small learning communities, including BIHS, Academic Choice, and the four small schools. A recent large gift from an anonymous donor helped Academic Choice purchase one computer lab and they are about to buy a second, and the small schools were able to purchase labs through a very specific state funded program. Currently, BIHS is the only program at BHS without a portable lab. These computers would provide our teachers with the ability to teach critical research and other skills that are essential to our student's academic success. There is currently one computer available for roughly every 80 BIHS students for humanities classes, while the four small schools have one computer for every 8 to 10 students. ? Please help the PAG raise $30,000 for this effort, and let us work together to provide this important resource for our program.??We have an offer of an anonymous matching gift of up to $15,000 to help meet this goal, so every dollar you contribute will go twice as far. ? C?onsider making a designated tax-deductible donation of any size to the Berkeley High School Development Group, and check to see if you employer will match your gift. This is a fantastic experience where they'll be able to watch Congressional meetings, speak and work with their representatives, and participate in learning activities with students across the nation. Unfortunately, these economic times have made fundraising difficult, and even with the trip fast-approaching (students will be departing this coming Sunday), some students have not yet been able to fund their trip. Our goal is to have as many students attend as possible, and we are asking our supportive community to help. If you'd like to contribute to the trip, please browse the CloseUp webiste: http:// www.closeup.org. Click the "support us" link at the bottom of the page. Select the option to support a school about midway down the page (note: if you select the "Support CloseUp" link, you'll be donating to the CloseUp Foundation and not to our particular trip). Our school code is SF007. Any amount that you are able to contribute will be greatly appreciated by all of the students participating in this incredible opportunity to experience our nation's capitol. Your contribution will greaty help us make this an inclusive and exciting trip for all students. Thank you in advance for your support. We want to make sure that as many of our families who are also middle school families, have the ability to attend both evenings. It will still be held in the Little Theater from 7 to 9 PM. For those parents who are planning to (or considering to) run for School Governance Council (SGC) or the Berkeley Schools Excellence Project (BSEP), the deadline for submitting personal statements has been moved back as well to Wednesday, September 16th. The statements will be posted on the PTSA website on Friday, September 18th, in time for everyone to review them before the elections at the Tuesday, September 22nd PTSA meeting. Elections Recap: There are three organizations for which we will be holding elections. * School Governance Council (SGC) - The SGC decides questions of school policy. From a policy standpoint, this is the most powerful committee at Berkeley High. During the past year, the SGC dealt with a wide range of program proposals aimed at addressing the achievement gap * Berkeley Schools Excellence Project (BSEP) - The BSEP committee determines how the school will spend its enrichment money. In light of the State's recent cuts to education, this committee's decisions become even more important. * The PTSA -- The PTSA facilitates a variety of forms of communication between the high school and the parent/guardian community, puts various committees together to advocate for students and their families, and hosts a variety of forums on topics of interest to the Berkeley High community. These committees and organizations are among the most meaningful ways to get involved at Berkeley High, and we encourage all parents who are interested in getting involved to consider running. If you would like to be on the ballot, please submit a short personal statement (no more than 200 words) to PTSA President Mark van Krieken at markvk4 at comcast.net . Explain what office you are running for and why you are interested in serving in this position. (The next such forum will be Thursday, Nov. 5, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the BHS library.) In brief, the proposal would shift BHS classes from a two-semester schedule to a trimester schedule, with classes lasting one, two or all three trimesters. Two alternate advisory proposals would schedule either two shorter advisory periods each week for all students, or one full-length advisory period every day for freshmen and sophomores only. The impact of these proposals on the BIHS academic program, including their impact on the IB diploma program, is still being assessed. At recent meetings of the BIHS Advisory Council and Parent Action Group, BIHS administrators and lead teachers said the proposals contained both positive and negative factors for BIHS. Other California schools have successfully integrated the IB program into a trimester schedule, so it can be done. But how well this would work in Berkeley depends on a number of decisions regarding curriculum, teacher schedules and other areas that have yet to be fleshed out, and it is nearly certain that some tradeoffs in the current BIHS program would be required. As a result, BIHS has not taken a formal position supporting or opposing the proposed schedule changes. The proposal is scheduled to be submitted to the School Governance Council for a vote on Nov. 12, followed by submission to the BUSD school board on Nov. 18. If the board approves a change (such a vote is unlikely before December), the teachers union would still need to ratify the plan before it could be put into effect. If you have not seen the proposed schedule, a copy is available on the PTSA website (PDF), where you can also read a wealth of public comment on the proposals . Although the period for emailed comments has ended, you can still be involved in the discussion by attending the Nov. 5 community forum. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Berkeley High Schedule Committee has recommended changing the school?s schedule from the current "6 by 2" semester system, to a "5 by 3" trimester schedule. This means that students would be taking five classes at a time (at approximately 70 minutes each) for each of three trimesters, as opposed to their presently taking six classes (approximately 55 minutes long) during each of the two semesters. Classes would last one, two or all three trimesters in length. There are a number of questions that still need to be addressed before many parents, students and teachers feel they are in a position to make a fully informed decision (e.g. impact on AP classes, impact for the IB diploma program at BIHS, more specifics on how it addresses the achievement gap, etc.). The public process will hopefully address them to everyone?s satisfaction before the matter moves on to the School Board. Everyone owes it to themselves, and to all of our children, to become fully informed about the changes being proposed to address the achievement gap at Berkeley High. We hope to see you there! URL: From bihs at berkeleyihs.org Thu Nov 5 00:59:13 2009 From: bihs at berkeleyihs.org (Berkeley International High School) Date: Wed, 04 Nov 2009 21:59:13 -0800 Subject: [BIHS] Schedule change and BIHS Message-ID: <4AF269B1.2000301@sbcglobal.net> The BIHS Parent Action Group was briefed today (Wednesday, Nov. 4) by lead teacher Matt Meyer and vice principal Amy Frey on the Berkeley High schedule change that has been proposed for implementation next school year. In short: *Much remains in flux, and much remains unknown, making it difficult to accurately predict positives and negatives.* And that will probably still be true as the proposal for a switch to trimester schedules moves through the School Governance Council (all-day discussion and vote scheduled for Monday, Nov. 16) and to the BUSD board (submission of a proposal scheduled for Nov. 18, though a vote is not expected until December). BIHS staff have created some example student schedules to see how the trimester proposal would work with BIHS course requirements. In Matt's words, some of the example schedules were "awesome;" some were not. Until the SGC firms up the proposal, and in fact until a full master schedule accounting for BIHS's 900+ students can be assembled, we won't really know how close to "awesome" the outcome would be. As a result, overall teacher reaction has been mixed, as they await more clarity on specific impacts. Things that seem likely at this point: * If a trimester proposal goes forward, it will likely be based on the "red" schedule, with a full-period advisory for one trimester for freshmen and sophomores only. * Some two-trimester courses would end up being split between first and third trimester; some might even be split between two different years. As a result, some students would have different teachers for the two halves of a class, which would require more coordination between teachers to make sure they cover the same material at the same pace. * Current juniors (Class of 2011) would face the hardest transition, since under the current timetable the changes would be implemented in the middle of their two-year IB program. BIHS staff say they haven't heard any indication that the schedule change might be approved but implementation delayed for a year to allow for better planning. * Students not seeking an IB diploma would have more options in their junior and senior years than with the current semester schedule. Students pursuing the IB diploma would continue to have little to no schedule flexibility as juniors and seniors. * The trimester schedule proposal is budget-neutral compared to the current schedule, which is a significant factor in why it was the winning proposal. Significant unknowns: * Which current full-year classes would be two trimesters, and which would be three. (BIHS staff are optimistic that they would be able to set these parameters for BIHS/IB courses.) * The impact on BIHS houses/student groupings. **If you would like to be part of the continuing schedule discussion, the final community forum is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 5 (that's tomorrow), from 7-8:30 p.m. in the BHS library. In addition, the final scheduled meeting of the Scheduling Committee on Nov. 9 and the all-day SGC meetiing on Nov. 16 are open to the public. Details on times and locations were listed on the BHS e-tree. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
