Assuming pybombs is the correct way. How do I undo everything I have done up until now?

I disagree. I have a feeling that installing gqrx alone will also install gnuradio and support for hackrf, so installing gqrx and gnuradio etc seems too much that will lead to problems. 

The actual easiest way to install gnuradio with gqrx and hackrf support is to use pybombs, see http://gnuradio.org/redmine/projects/pybombs/wiki
