Howdy,
I have just realised he mentioned "Intel Atom". That's a cpu for
netbooks and does not provide a good computing power. Minimizing DSP
bandwidth by decreasing sampling speed of HackRF should solve it.

On the other hand my unit have had burned 1st RF amp so it was
overloading the FET driver. The extraordinary heat could be easily
detected even via the plastic case. If Ian's box doesn't seem to heat up
- I'd assume its all OK. The problem lies within computing speed.
