Joel - This is not my area, but in the past, I have discussed some aspects of this with others here. I believe we do not use a test at the entry level for titles such as custodian, but do use a test at the supervisory level. My understanding is that we expect the custodians to be guided by supervisors in the performance of simple cleaning tasks. At the upper levels I believe they have a test and use test content on things such as understanding written directions and basic technical knowledge regarding things such as cleaning chemicals. This is because supervisors have to guide the entry-level workers and ensure work is performed correctly and safely. As part of this, they need to have good knowledge of cleaning techniques, sanitary standards, and be able read and understand directions, warnings, and the like.

René

PS Thanks for the post about the decision on Smith et al. v. Boston. It was very interesting and helpful.

If the job is truly unskilled labor, one might use biodata to predict turnover. Criterion validity study required.

Typically labor service jobs are not filled based on an exam.

Has anyone had experience using exams for labor service jobs? If so, what type?

These possibilities come to mind:
a. Following instructions
b. Observation
c. Memory
d. Conscientiousness
e. Basic reading

Does anyone use these or other tests for labor service jobs?

Thx.

Joel
