Levees.org has launched its latest salvo to squash myths and
misinformation about the metro New Orleans flooding.

The flood protection advocacy group's new campaign, Stop Katrina
Shorthand, is urging everyone in metro New Orleans to refrain from
labeling the devastating flooding on August 2005 as “caused by
Katrina.” Such oversimplification, the group says, promotes 
misunderstanding and
leads American citizens-at-large to believe the New Orleans region was
simply overwhelmed by a natural disaster, when in fact, the flooding
was primarily a man-made event.

“Saying Katrina flooded New Orleans is like saying traffic broke the
Interstate-35 bridge in Minneapolis,” says Sandy Rosenthal, founder of
Levees.org.   “Both the traffic and Katrina revealed structural flaws
and civil engineering mistakes.”

As a springboard for its new campaign, Levees.org is spotlighting a
resolution unanimously passed by the New Orleans City Council urging
all local media to refrain from using Katrina shorthand.   The
resolution, written by Levees.org, was sponsored by President Arnie
Fielkow and co-sponsored by Councilwoman Cynthia Willard-Lewis
District E.

Levees.org will also offer “seals of approval” to local reporters in
instances when they refrain from using Katrina Shorthand and instead
reference the flooding as due to man made failures.

The group has made bumper stickers that say: "8-29-05, Manmade
Disaster, Stop Katrina Shorthand" that can be picked up at businesses
throughout the Greater New Orleans Region.
