Apple includes a free copy of backup software with Mac OS Snow Leopard and all new Macs called "Time Machine." How does Time Machine work? Is it reliable? What device or devices does Time Machine require to backup your data? Are there other backup programs that can be used with or instead of Time Machine? How does Time Machine differ from or work with Apple's Time Capsule?
While we are looking at backup software what hardware alternatives can we use to store our irreplaceable data? Is a single internal hard drive enough? How often do hard drives fail? Can data be recovered from a failed hard drive? Is an external hard drive necessary? Which is better – a drive connected to our Macs by a USB or by a Firewire connection? Are there devices that can backup data automatically? What is a RAID drive? What benefits (if any) can a RAID drive offer?
Apple recently began shipping new MacBook Pros. Apple made many improvements in all of the Pro models. The processors on some models were upgraded from dual-core to quad-core I7 Intel Processors. Did the processor changes make the new MacBook Pros a little or a lot faster? Apple added a new interface called "ThunderBolt." What is that and how will it improve your Mac computing experience? Will this interface be added to other Macs, iPads and iPhones? What other improvements did Apple make to the new MacBook Pros that make them the most advanced, best laptops on planet earth?
At the April 5th, 2011 meeting we will discuss the above topics and even see firsthand many of the devices mentioned. There will not be any replay of this meeting on our NOMUG Facebook page nor will all of these topics be discussed at any one meeting again this year. You won't find on the internet in one or even one hundred locations all that will be discussed at this meeting with a presentation given by Mac Experts with twenty-five plus years of Mac experience. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced Mac user be there in attendance to advance your own Mac expertise.
NOTE: NOMUG meetings are free and open to the public. Guests are welcome.
MEETING LOCATION CHANGE INFO – Due to scheduling conflicts at the Jefferson Parish Library NOMUG meetings will be held at the Café East Restaurant. Café East is the designated place for future NOMUG meetings.
At Café East there is plenty of well lit, safe off-street parking. Presentations will be shown on a large screen via a high-definition projector.
Hungry and/or thirsty? After the meeting we will adjourn downstairs to the restaurant and members or guests of NOMUG can enjoy Café East's excellent Chinese and Asian fusion cuisine. During the meeting refreshments or drinks are available at the restaurant's cash bar on the first floor.
DIRECTIONS: See the Map above. Café East is on Rye street in Metairie "across" Clearview Parkway from the Target store in the Clearview Shopping Center. Take the Clearview exit North from the expressway and then immediately move left over to the I-10 service road turnoff on the neutral ground. Café East is on Rye Street "behind" the Campo Appliance store located on the service road.
