COASTAL AND INSURANCE WOES
Yesterday, we found out that another home insurance company with policies in Louisiana folded. This is the ninth insurance company in Louisiana to close since the summer of 2020, and it happened right as the Gulf Coast is being threatened by another major hurricane. Those of us in South Louisiana are downcast as we anticipate the damage that will be done by Hurricane Ian in Florida - we will be there to help in any way that we can.
Meanwhile, the state has announced that we will see more than $31 billion a year in storm surge damage under worst-case predictions of sea level rise if we don't take immediate action to rebuild our declining coastline.
Between rising sea levels, more damaging storms and hurricanes, and increasingly expensive home and flood insurance, the future for residents of New Orleans and south Louisiana is uncertain.
As your next State Senator, infrastructure will be one of my top priorities - as it already is. I'll continue to focus on both traditional drainage and nature-based solutions, such as rebuilding our coastline, reforesting our urban areas, and installing green infrastructure to naturally hold stormwater. 
This past session, I passed the Hazard Mitigation Loan Fund, which will help local governments with drainage and home elevation projects funded by federal dollars. We need to be focused moving forward to fund these important projects.
