Weekend weather looks nice, so it will be Amtgard as usual on Saturday at
Santa Rosa Park.

There will be an Althing after the day of fighting.  There will be two
separate voting occurrences.

One is a Westmarch Althing vote, which will pertain to voting members only.
The other is a local park issue, and is open to anyone who has been a member
of SSD more than 1 month.

The local park issue will be whether or not to change our name from "Seven
Sleeping Dragons" to "Seven Dragons".
A "Yes" vote will mean you do wish to change the name to "Seven Dragons"
A "No" vote means you wish the name to stay the same ("Seven Sleeping
Dragons")
An "Abstain" vote means you do not wish to cast a vote in the matter.  An
abstain vote will not count towards the majority required to change the
name.

As stated before, I will not be in attendance this week as I will be in
Tokyo (hopefully not having gone insane from an 11 hour plane ride).
Champion Ailliath will also not be in attendance, as he will be in Seattle.
Regent Leah and Prime Minister Griffin will be taking care of bidness.

For those who just want to cut to the chase, the list is at the bottom.
   
  Darkshore is a wonderful event consisting of four days of fighting in unusual terrain against a large number of people, is a great deal of fun, and is currently my favorite Amtgard event.
   
              It is also very different from our normal park, and requires some special considerations.  Firstly, it is held in a redwood forest.  Now, anyone who is familiar with Sequoia sempervirens is aware that they require quite a bit of precipitation to grow, often in the form of mist condensing on the upper branches and dripping down.  This means that Darkshore very often has foggy weather, particularly in the morning and at night.  It means that when there is fog, it becomes very wet, especially under the trees where we will be camping.  It can also be very cold.  What does this mean?  Bring a jacket, or a cloak.  Bring layers.  Bring changes of clothing.  (Sweaty clothes cool off and chill your body!)  Bring a warm sleeping bag.  Bring extra blankets.  Sleep with a friend ? it?s warmer.
              The fields themselves range from mostly flat to mostly steep hillsides.  Again, if you?ve ever tried running around in redwood country, you?ll know that they drop a lot of needles and branches, making the ground slick and hard to run on.  (And with a delightfully thick and rich layer of topsoil, but that?s not important right now.)  Fighting in the ravine requires good shoes with tough, textured soles.  I?ve fought in it with flat, un-scored boot soles.  It is an exercise in going nowhere but downhill, and it?s a perfect recipe for twisting an ankle.  Even the flatter fields have bumps, so bring good shoes!
              As for any park or campground; it is a wilderness area.  There is running water, but it is cold.  There are no showering facilities, so bring a washcloth or small towel to clean yourself off.  There are porti-potties.  Spare TP is nice to have.  Be aware also that you may encounter wildlife; from scrub jays to banana slugs, and from drunken Amtgarders to ticks.  (Griffin adds that there are cougars.  Also, deer; and I wouldn?t rule out zombies.  Be prepared.)
   
              Meals at Darkshore are provided, but I recommend bringing some food with you; in case you don?t want what is being served, or a meal gets missed.  You should definitely bring water and anything else you may want to drink.
   
              As I said at the top, Darkshore is a blast
 just be sure to bring with you everything you need!  That being said, also try to pack everything as compactly as possible.  If you can, share some gear with others ? make up a repair kit or first-aid kit with someone else who is going, bring some food to share with others, whatever.  Be safe, stay warm, stay healthy, fight hard!

As all too few of you are aware, the War of the Darkshore XI is coming up
this Memorial Day weekend.  On Friday, May 23rd, your leaders and the cr?me
de la cr?me of the scurrying masses (or, as I like to call them, "you
people") are going to be driving a few hours to the north to attend the
premier California multi-day event.  Want to learn some new tricks?
There'll be sword knights.  Want to learn new construction techniques for
weapons, garb, or other fun stuff?  There'll be... more sword knights,
serpent knights, and people who are just plain cool.  Want to fight for
multiple days with an incredible variety of people you've never met before,
gain a wider perspective on Amtgard, and just have a whole ton of fun?  Come

what to bring?  Wait for Faye to send around her List (yes, it deserves the

Less than two weeks to Darkshore!  Get any questions or concerns you have

Activities at Darkshore: Ditching, Class games, castle battle, ravine battle
(maybe even a castle battle in the ravine!), tournaments, jugging, A&S
tournament, bardics, feast, court, and lots, lots more.

Enough with that, on with more important things..like Amtgard this Saturday.

Weatherman says it could be in the mid to high 80's on Saturday, so make
sure to drink plenty of liquids and take regular breaks.  Heat exhaustion
sucks!  Also strongly consider sunscreen and some kind of head covering.
So, bidness as usual at Santa Rosa Park.

Also, there will be a Westmarch election for Prime Minister (the poor sod in
charge of keeping records and whatnots).  All voting members are encouraged
to throw in their vote.  We will be holding a brief Althing after the day's
fighting.  If you know you are going to be absent, please send me a message
so we can arrange to have you fill out a proxy vote.

versus all SSD opponents.

Due to the raging wildfire in the Santa Cruz Mountains, that is <10 miles
from Mt Madonna and moving at 2 mph...the Mt Madonna site is cancelled
effective immediately.
HOWEVER
Keluric's brother owns a 7 acre parcel in Creston that he is offering to let
us use for Darkshore.  So Darkshore is still happening, just at a different
locale.

Said brother also owns a country store <4 miles from the site, so it would
be extremely cool of everyone to stop there and pick up additional
supplies.  Even if it's just some water, soda or something.  He's really
taking our butts out of the fire on this one.


Also, because this is now on private property, there will be an additional
waiver that will need to be signed.  This waiver protects the property
owners in the unlikely event of injury or accident.

**IF YOU ARE A MINOR, YOU MUST HAVE YOUR PARENTS SIGN THE NEW WAIVER**
They are working on getting one to me as we speak.  If we cannot get one in
time, your parents will need to sign a Writ of Temporary Guardianship to
appoint someone who has their authority to sign the waiver on their behalf.

We're requesting anyone who has shade tents/pavilions to bring them to
create additional shade, since we dont know how many trees the property
has.  The site is likely unprepped for a big group of wierdos to go stomping
around and camping, so we might need volunteers to help us get the site
ready.

Greetings to our myriad members!  This is your Prime Minister (the guy who
maintains the records, email list, website, and so on).

My special greetings to the 24 of you I just added to this list, who may not
know what Darkshore is, or why the list will be filled with email about it
today.  This message is meant, in large part, to tell you just that.

Those of you who have been through this before... well, things have changed
slightly.

Darkshore is a major fighting event - the largest in California, in fact.
It runs from Friday through Monday, with battlegames, tournaments, and all
sorts of other excitement, including a castle battle.  It'll be awesome, and
all are welcome!  (Email me for more information.)

As all of you except the recent additions recently heard, the site where it
is normally held is currently on fire, or very nearly.  One thing that Dave
didn't specifically mention, however, is that Creston, the new site of the
event, is frighteningly close to San Luis Obispo - about 24 miles away, in
fact.  If this means that any of you are more likely to be able to come
because of this, let me know, and we'll see what can be done to get you up
there.  For those of you under 18, there are now two event-specific waivers
that need to be signed by your parents - once again, get in touch with me or
Dave or all of our officers (monarchy at sloamtgard.com) if you need waivers or
want to come to the new, close event site.

Don't forget, Crown Qualifications are this weekend!  Expect the usual A&S

We will be meeting at the usual spot at Santa Rosa Park on Saturday.  In
addition to the day's fighting, we will be holding elections afterwards.
There is a ballot both for Westmarch officers, and for local officers.  If
you are a voting member and will not be present, please email your proxy
ballot to Prime Minister Griffin at mazrimbelmedar at gmail.com no later than
Friday night.

Westmarch Elections:

Prince:  Prince Sir Euric is running for second term.  Baronet Squire Grix
has also thrown his hat in the ring.
Regent: Lady Squire Gwendair is running for Westmarch Regent, as is Baron
Thistledown.
GMR:  Rafael and Baronet Squire Laoric are each running for Westmarch
Guildmaster of Reeves
Board of Directors Seat:  Lord Sir Keluric is running against Baronet Squire
Laoric for this position to fill a vacancy left by Lord Squire Hannibal's
departure.

A vote to approve funds of $350 from Westmarch coffers for the Feast of Mars
and Fall Coronation event.  These funds are to cover land use and feast.
Voting options for this measure are "Yes" "No" "Abstain" or "Delay Until
September Althing"

newer and exciting battlegames.  I even have a neat file full of battlegames
if I can ever get around to printing them.

Weather is calling for high 70's/low 80's, so it's going to be Amtgard at
Santa Rosa Park on Saturday!

Regent Leah and Myself will not be in attendance, as we've been roped into
manual labor for family in Ventura.  So you're going to be in the capable
hands of PM Griffin (and I think Ailliath is showing up, too.)   I've also
heard Sir Keluric and Lady Gwendair might be showing up, and they might be
dragging Duke Feanix of Wavehaven and Page Aylina as well.

Special thank you and a big WELCOME BACK! to Krom and Thorik from their
trials and tribulations in Alternate Reality (Canada).

So there should be a good turnout of fun and excitement.  I'll think fondly
of you all while I'm swinging a hammer.

Oh, and here are those pesky election results from PM Griffin:

*Baron-Baron Fresh-and-Minty-Squire Deimos (Khan) received 10 votes for his
second term as Baron, despite his reign of terror these last six months.

The associated entity, Page Leah, continues to play second fiddle (and win
A&S competitions), with 10 votes confirming her for the position of Reagent.
Once she's done being an ingredient, she'll resume her duties as Regent.

Woman-at-Arms Braith completes the unholy trifecta of Sir Keluric's
(extended) belted family as she steps up to replace Ailliath as Champion,
also with 10 votes.

*And while we're reporting election results, here are the Westmarch election
results, courtesy of WM Prime Minister Fiks:

*Ladies, gentlemen, faeries, I give to you the results:

For the office of Prince of Westmarch, gaining 32 votes to his opponent's
17, Sir Euric defends his right to the crown and remains as Prince Sir Euric
of Westmarch.

For the office of Regent of Westmarch, garnering 34 votes against 13 votes,
Squire Gwendair wins the Regent's election.

Winning a total of 24 votes to his opponent's 10, Rafael assumes the
position of Guildmaster of Reeves of Westmarch.

For the vacated position on the Board of Directors, Sir Keluric gains 39
votes to Squire Laoric's 9. By the Corpora, Sir Keluric shall assume the
empty seat on the Board while Squire Laoric shall be reserved as an
alternate in the chance a member of the Board is unable to attend a meeting
and vote.

Measure 1 on the ballot, approval of funds in the order of $350 for the
Feast of Mars and Coronation event, passes with a simple majority of 43
approval to 3 against to 1 vote to delay.

Gonna be a warm one this weekend, with temps in the mid 80's.  So it will be
mayhem as usual at Santa Rosa Park at the usual time.
It's good to polish up your skills before most of our populace returns from
Spring Break.

Don't forget, Feast of Mars 4 is only a couple weeks away!  Weekend long
gladiatorial styled events in King City!

Also, I will need to meet with the rest of the Monarchy after Amtgard to
discuss end-reign awards.  If you are in the monarchy and will not be
attending this weekend, it is important that you email me with your awards
suggestions.

If you are not on the monarchy, I would still like to hear from the rest of
you as to any awards you think your fellow Amtgarders might be due.  50
pairs of eyes is better than my two alone, and I really appreciate the

As a reminder, there will be no park officers at Amtgard next saturday
(September 20th), as we will be attending Feast of Mars/Coronation up in

I know the veterans of FoM I-III are realizing there will be two additional
FoM themed battlegames attached to the event this year.
The Slave Uprising will pit numerous "slaves" against the guards. Slaves
will be armed with only daggers, but will be able to 'borrow' any weapon of
other slaves or guards they can grab from their cold dead hands. There will
be multiple rounds, and all who want to play guards/slaves will get the
chance. This symbolizes how the slaves got into the gladiator autcion in the
first place.
The Tide of Titans Battlegame will consist of the Trainers from the normal
FoM events, any who were too busy making food, running the event, and the
best gladiators, playing the Roman Gods and Godesses. The rest will be
playing specialized titans. The object is for one side to eliminate the
other, however, the titans will have a collective life pool to draw from.
I am still seeking anyone interested in Donating prizes for FoM4. So far, I
have received some various prizes, and will keep a running list of all those
who donate. Cash prizes will not be accepted, although if you wish to donate
money for materials, I can offer some suggestions. I will find a crafter and
get you together to provide something nice between you. Every year, we have
had tremendous support in this area, and everyone last year left with at
least one prize.
This year, I would like to encourage the donations, and so the top three
people who donate, will recieve the Favor of Mars. What this entails will be
announced at the appropriate time during the event. Donations will be
weighed by a panel of those running the event, and the quantity and quality
of the donation will be taken into consideration. Other things that will
make the donations more itneresting will be their relation to the Feast of
Mars theme.
Also, I need to have people make me cheap, but safe daggers for donation. We
will need them for the Slave Uprising Battlegame. They will only need to be
used for this event, and then you will have them back. Place your name
somewhere on the dagger if you want to make sure it comes back to you.

I would also like to add a special thanks to Lag of Siar Geata, who has gone
above and beyond to make sure there will be an effective first aid kit. I
hope we will not need to use the kit in any way, but it is much appreciated.
Darkshore XI saw a number of bloody scrapes and bloody noses, it will be
nice to have readily available resources to cover these potential concerns.*



As always, I recommend you bring sufficient camping supplies to cover
yourself over the weekend, in the unlikely event something happens to a
sponsored meal or if they are cooking something you don't like.  There are
multiple grocery stores within driving distance, in the event you forget
something or just get too generous with your own supplies.

This is a fantastic event and is mostly militia style (no pesky spells to
get in the way of your uberness).  So bring your gear, armor, garb,
and..well..yourselves.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me
and I can get you answers pretty darn quick.

Weather forecast is for upper 70's/low 80's.  Make sure to bring along a
little sunscreen and remember to take frequent breaks.  There are always
more fights, and we don't need anyone getting heatstroke or dehydration or
frozen in carbonite.

A small group of us are headed up to Crimsonwood in Rohnert Park this
weekend, but there will still be Amtgard as usual at Santa Rosa Park.
You will be in the more than capable hands of Lady Faye, who was running
this group well before I did.  Ysea will be carting up my bag of loaner
weapons.

Next weekend we will be having a short court to hand out awards to those who
were not present at Feast of Mars.

And a big "Welcome Back!" to all our students (along with condolences, now
that summer is officially over).  Make sure to take advantage of this
weekend to knock off the rust and enjoy the freedom that comes with not
being under my tyrannical thumb for once.

Sorry for missing last week, but we're back and in bidness!

Everything looks good for Amtgard this week, with the exception of a 40%
chance of rain.  I'll keep tabs on this as the week unfolds.  Suffice to
say, if there is rain, there will be no Amtgard.  I know many of you don't
mind a little rain, but I don't want anyone getting hurt (again).  There is
no one fight worth missing the next fifty, or risking permanent injury.

On a happier note, I'm glad that many of you made it through the summer and
found your way back to Amtgard.  I hope the weather cooperates so that I can
see you on the field Saturday at good ol' Santa Rosa Park.

The monarchy had a nice long discussion about the upcoming reign, so we have
some fun ideas to unleash upon you just as soon as we can coordinate.

Voting members: we have an Althing this weekend.  The 2 voting issues are
whether or not to promote Siar Geata, the San Diego Shire, to Barony
Status.  They've got clearance from everyone involved, and now simply need
the populace of Westmarch's voting approval.  I support their promotion
wholeheartedly.  The other voting issue is whether or not to extend current
reigns by 3 months so that the next coronation will align with Darkshore,
California's premiere Amtgard event.  This vote will also serve as a local
vote as to whether or not you want to extend the current Reign of Evil by
the same 3 months.  I'm along for the ride either way you guys want it.

Gonna be a warm one in the mid 80's on Saturday, so make sure to bring stuff
to drink (or money to get stuff to drink from the mini mart), as there won't
be any community water this weekend.  Amtgard as usual at Santa Rosa Park,
so bring your weapons and a friend!

Hopefully as soon as I unbury myself from projects I'll get a tentative list
of fun things to do this reign.  The first thing I'm going to mention is our
annual canned food drive.
This starts on the first weekend in November.  For every 10 canned good or
packaged food items, you will receive 1 undeclared credit to put towards
whatever class you'de like (providing you can play them: ie: no
paladin/anti-paladin credits if you're not a knight...which, according to
our current roster is everybody).  Remember that you can only earn 8 credits
in a given month, but if you're bringing tons of canned goods, we'll
probably get something worked out to make sure you still get credits for
them.  This canned food drive benefits the Food Bank of SLO, and is a great
way for us to give back to the community.  This drive will run from November
until the end of December.  Hopefully we can help people have a good
Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday.  So check your cupboards (or your
parents cupboards, with their permission) and see if you can help us out.  I
recall us having over 200 items last year, and I would love to see if we can
better that.

So, keep that in mind.  I would appreciate all the help you can muster.

Anyway, back to the pile of unpleasantness.  More to come later, in the
meantime, fight well and have a good time.

Yikes.  Weatherman says 50% chance of rain on Saturday after 60% chance on
Friday.  We'll keep a close eye on the situation and let you know if things
change.

In the event of active rain on Saturday - we will *not* meet.  Stay home,
stay dry, stay unbroken.  If there is not active rain Saturday, we will
probably evaluate the field and see if Amtgard is feasible.

There is an Althing for voting members.  Please review the ballot at
http://www.caamtgard.com/docs/ballots/november-althing-08.pdf and get your
proxy ballot emailed to Griffin before Saturday, just in case we do not
meet.

Item 1. Voting to allow Ashen Spire (San Jose group) to join Westmarch.
I believe Ashen Spire would make a fine addition to Westmarch, and see no
reason to vote otherwise.

Item 2.  Voting to waive the corpora requirement of 6 months for Ashen Spire
to be promoted to a core land
We largely voted against Siar Geata being recommended for promotion to
Barony status back when they did not meet the requirements.  A yes vote here
is a big insult to Siar Geata by allowing a different group preferential
treatment.  In order to keep a strong Westmarch, we need to not allow
exceptions to the rules, especially in our infancy stages.  Ashen Spire is a
good up and coming group, but I think they need to be follow the rules
Westmarch.

There are no local issues to vote on.

Weather report says its only 10/20% chance up through 5pm when it turns to

Friday is our demo at SLO High School.  I've been trying to crank out some
extra loaners for the zerg, but if anyone wants to show up with a few extras
that would be helpful.
We're going to be setting up at 4:30, hopefully starting at 5pm.  Will
probably have the zerg do ditch battles and eventually a capture the flag.
Maybe kill-your-killer if the numbers aren't huge.
So if you are able to help, please shoot me an email so we can coordinate.


Saturday will be Amtgard as usual at Santa Rosa Park.  Weather says mid to
high 80's, so make sure to bring sunscreen and whatnots.  Skyler sent me a
heads up that there will be some BBQ at the park put on by the Robotics
club.  Hopefully that shouldn't spill on to our normal fighting field, and
maybe we can lure some of them over.  If by some weird chance of luck the
park is jam packed, we'll wait for people to show up and then probably move
to our old field at Cal Poly for the time being.  I seriously doubt this
will be necessary.

Sunday is part two of the Good vs. Evil series of battlegames.  This month
it is being held at Wyvern's Spur in Berkeley.  So if you want to gather a

I just wanted to send a note out to everyone who came out today.  I just
wanted to say.  Thank you.
I've been burning out pretty hard lately, and was really reluctant to come
out.  Today really helped recharge my Amt-batteries.
I don't know if it was the good fights, the great attitudes, or the
combination of both, but I had a really good time.

Amtgarders,

We're finally (after an absurdly long wait) going to have an A&S afternoon
for everyone.  It will be at the Cal Poly University Union (see

in room 216 on Sunday the 7th from 1-5pm.  We are being kicked out of the
room at that time, so we won't be there any later than that.  Parking is
free on campus on Sundays, so don't worry about getting a permit.

For dues paid members, you will be eligible to make a green or black t-tunic
(we provide all materials needed) or a 36" short sword (again, we provide
all the materials).  If you are not dues paid, I suggest you pay the $6 if
you'd like to make anything.  You are also welcome to bring in anything you
are working on or want advice on.  Deimos, Braith, Griffin, and myself will
all be there to help with whatever we can.

If you would like to make a tunic in a different color, please email me and
I'll tell you what supplies you need to bring.  If you want to make a weapon
other than a short sword, please contact Deimos at

Well I had been waiting to give out some awards to Skyler/Skyman before he
graduated and moved on, but I fear I may be too late.
So I'm going to announce the awards he was given out at Feast of Mars
(Coronation) and the reasons therein.

Skyler, if you're still around, let me know when we'll see you and you can

Without further ado:

The Monarchy of the Seven Sleeping Dragons has discussed and opted to bestow
the following awards upon Skyler:

A First Order of the Facade, for his portrayal of Charon at our June Quest
Day
A First Order of the Smith, for his work on our June Quest Day
A First Order of the Warrior, for prowess during our August Warmaster
Tournament
A Third Order of the Rose, for providing root beer floats on a 100 degree
day
*A First Order of the Jovious, for consistently having a great attitude both
on and off the field
*A Second Order of the Mask, for continued portrayal of his Barbarian
persona and excellent battlecries.

(* are awards that a given monarchy is only allowed to give out 1 per reign)

In my personal opinion, awards are an important facet of Amtgard.  Some
awards are necessary on the path to knighthood (Warrior, Dragon, Owl, Rose,
to name a few), but mostly it is to recognize the efforts of our populace.
Some people place a lot of importance on awards, some place very little.
Everybody who earns an award has helped out in some way - every little bit
of effort someone puts into the game inspires others.  So if you see someone
you think has done a particularly good job at something, please let myself
or any other member of the monarchy know.  We try to keep an eye out, but we
can't be everywhere.

The new Amtgard 7.5 rules have been released (They are subject to a few
changes that the Rules Committee will be hammering out over the next couple
weeks.  IE: The standard gauge for plate armor is 18, but the gauge for

ruleset which will be taking effect immediately.

Hope this finds you all well, warm, and dry.  It's been an interesting week
around these parts, even a tornado warning Sunday night.  (Gotta be honest,
if I looked out the window one stormy night, and a bolt of lightning
illuminated a funnel cloud - I'd assume I saw wrong and would then move
about my business).

Weather forecast (at least for now) looks like no rain on Saturday, so we'll
be having our usual Amtgard meeting at Santa Rosa Park.  I know alot of you
Cal Poly students are probably gone for vacation already, but I'll still
hang around to see if anyone shows up.  If nobody does, we'll usually fold
up and call it a day - so if you're planning on showing up late, please
email me so that we don't miss you.

There will likely be no Amtgard the 27th, as most people will still be out
and about doing their Holiday goodness (or badness, as the case may be).  If
