Weather looks good, albeit a little cold. So this may not be the week for shorts. We'll be having our usual meeting at Santa Rosa Park commencing at 1pm. This is the last day to bring canned goods for the food drive (Well, the last day if you want to receive credit, that is). We're close to beating last year's total, which in this economy, is a damn awesome thing. Hopefully we'll be able to run another Goblin Treasure Trove game. Also there is a local Althing after Amtgard to elect the autocrat of Westmarch Crown Qualifications. I am running for this position, with MaA Griffin as an alternate in the event of conflicts. There will be a Westmarch Althing vote next weekend. I believe we are extended for a week waiting for more candidates for the WM Board of Directors. Lady Faye and MaA Griffin will not be out this week, as they are seeking colder climates. So be advised there is not likely to be free water this week, unless I miraculously find time to get a flat or two. That is all. See you on the field! -Dave/Deimos PS: This is what the weekly email looks like when you hit SAVE instead of SEND. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A warm day? Could it be true?!) So it looks like good times at Santa Rosa Park. The food drive deadline was extended by one week so people coming back could play in the goblin game, and so people could bring last minute donations (Psst! Laoric! Don't forget your stuff!) There will be a Westmarch related Althing vote after the day of fighting. The ballot can be found here: http://www.mogdman.com/amtgard/january-althing-09.pdf I'd also like to announce a new flyer-making contest. We'll vote on the best new flyer, and the winner will get a prize. I'll hammer out the details later, but this is just to get the creative juices flowing. And so people can ask me "Hey, when's the deadline for entries?" and "What is the prize going to be?" so that I don't forget about it. I'm also thinking we'll be having a chaos tournament on the day we host the Good vs. Evil finale. And a calendar of upcoming events: Westmarch Fighter's Tutorial, Sunday January 18th at Ashen Spire (San Jose) http://www.caamtgard.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1445 I will be attending, as I am instructing basic and advanced polearm Good vs. Evil battlegame, round 4 of 5. Also, if you plan on taking us up on the free tunic and/or sword offer, kindly let me know so I can bring appropriate materials (and not have to bring a ton extra, because walking with all that stuff sucks) Midreign festivities: Saturday February 21st at Wavehaven (Santa Cruz) http://www.caamtgard.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1741 Good vs. Evil Battlegame, round 5 of 5. Message-ID: <1ca801c10901142104q61f7f35dsf000b1192567424d@mail.gmail.com> Wow. Forecast is calling for the low 80's on Saturday. Make sure to bring a bottle or two of Gatorade like substances to keep heatstroke away. Should be a nice day for Amtgard. We will meet at the usual spot at Santa Rosa Park, commencing at 1pm. Sunday is the Westmarch Fighter Tutorial, with classes on Single Sword, Sword and Shield, Paired Swords, and Polearm. Introductory and advanced classes will be taught, with ditching and other things to try out your newfound skills. This event is located at Ashen Spire in San Jose. Any SSD'er who makes the journey will earn an extra bonus credit for travel. The 2nd half of our canned food drive netted 86 cans/packages of food (clocking in at 82 pounds), added to our 1st half total of 165 cans/packages at 140lbs, putting us at a grand total of 251 cans/packages at 222 lbs. Last year we gathered 220 cans/packages, so I'm proud to say we beat last years total, even with the painful economy. I am extremely proud of our group for accomplishing this, and it's a great way to give back to the community. A personal, heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated (and even if you thought of donating or tried to scrounge up donations, I still thank you.) There is currently a small group wanting to partake of a weekly fighter practice in the Paso Robles area. Lady Faye has volunteered to spearhead this fighter practice. She will discuss times and locations with the interested parties. Please direct all further inquiries to her (or to me, and I'll forward them along to her). Don't forget next weekend is the Good vs. Evil quest in Wavehaven (Santa Cruz), and we have our 2nd Arts & Science night at the Cal Poly UU on the following Sunday Thank you for your time, and hope to see you all on the field Saturday! -Dave/Deimos -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... However, a majority of the Monarchy will be down south at Siar Geata's Monster Mash event, so unless someone wants to run things at the park in our absence, there may not be Amtgard regardless of weather. I will notify everyone if this changes. Next upcoming event is February 21st up in Santa Cruz (Wavehaven). It's the midreign of Westmarch, featuring a fighting tournament, an Arts & Science tournament, a feast, and court. This weekend is supposed to be an Althing to elect Prime Ministers. Our only Prime Minister Candidate is our perennial PM Masochist Griffin. There is also an election for Westmarch PM. I believe the sole candidate is Fiks (the current Westmarch PM is braving a second term). There is also an election to fill the vacant Westmarch GMR (Guildmaster of Reeves) position. The three candidates are: Baronet Squire Laoric of Seven Sleeping Dragons Baron Thistledown of Wyvernspur Lord Thorin of Wavehaven All voting members are urged to email their proxy ballots to, well, ME because this election has to do with Griffin and he's not allowed to count ballots. We will have an Althing after the day's fighting. Westmarch has a couple items to vote on, and we have a couple local issues. Westmarch has put forth the idea of a poll regarding a re-write of the corpora, an item regarding the voting rights of 'non core' lands, and whether or not the new Champion of Westmarch position should be decided by Right by Arms (winning the Champions tournament), or by vote (like the rest of the officers). Local issues are with regards to the use of treasury funds. If you are a voting member and will be unable to attend, please let me know. Crown Quals will be held at our park on the 18th, so we'll have a rather large influx of people. There will be an Arts & Science tournament as well as a fighting tournament. I encourage you all to participate. There will be many awesome people and ditching and soforth (maybe even a battlegame or two, if we can make it work). As of yet, the only person to declare to run for office is Leah, who will be running for Monarch. The positions of Champion (safety officer) and Regent (Arts & science officer) need to be filled, so I hope people will step up and help. I also encourage everyone to log on to the Westmarch forums at http://www.caamtgard.com/phpBB3/ We have a section for our group which is largely unused. I'de like to see more discussions/debates/etc in there. Hope to see you all Saturday! -Dave/Deimos -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Don't forget, April 18th is the Westmarch Crown Qualification day, so bring anything you want to enter in the Arts & Science tournament (garb, weapons, food, art, etc etc) and bring yourself to fight in one (or all) of the tournaments. Griffin will send out an email detailing times and events. We also have an Open House booth at the same time on Cal Poly campus. If you would like to help man the booth it would be greatly appreciated. I will be providing a pop-up canopy so that people will not roast in the sun (although, I believe last time we were on a lawn under a tree anyway). Please contact Lady Faye or Regent Leah if you would like to help. Or, you can just tell me to tell them - that's okay too. Thanks for your time! So here goes, edited for updated information: Darkshore is a wonderful event consisting of four days of fighting in unusual terrain against a large number of people, is a great deal of fun, and is currently my favorite Amtgard event. It is also very different from our normal park, and requires some special considerations. Firstly, it is held in a redwood forest. Now, anyone who is familiar with *Sequoia sempervirens* is aware that they require quite a bit of precipitation to grow, often in the form of mist condensing on the upper branches and dripping down. This means that Darkshore very often has foggy weather, particularly in the morning and at night. It means that when there is fog, it becomes very wet, especially under the trees where we will be camping. It can also be very cold. What does this mean? Bring a jacket, or a cloak. Bring layers. Bring changes of clothing. (Sweaty clothes cool off and chill your body!) Bring a warm sleeping bag. Bring extra blankets. Sleep with a friend ? it?s warmer. [*Deimos' note: She's not freakin' kidding. I just about went into hypothermia one year because I was a big old moron and didn't heed this type of advice. This is California, so the one thing you can count on, is that the weather has no idea what it's doing either.] * The fields themselves range from mostly flat to mostly steep hillsides. Again, if you?ve ever tried running around in redwood country, you?ll know that they drop a lot of needles and branches, making the ground slick and hard to run on. (And with a delightfully thick and rich layer of topsoil, but that?s not important right now.) Fighting in the ravine requires good shoes with tough, textured soles. I?ve fought in it with flat, un-scored boot soles. It is an exercise in going nowhere but downhill, and it?s a perfect recipe for twisting an ankle. Even the flatter fields have bumps, so bring good shoes! As for any park or campground; it is a wilderness area. There is running water, but it is cold. There are showering facilities, but they are not in immediate proximity to the campsite and (I believe) you have to pay. If that's not your cup of tea, bring a washcloth or small towel to keep yourself clean. *[Deimos' note: I also recommend Wet Ones or similar moist towelette, these act as a decent bathing agent. Also, bring deodorant, lots of it.**]* There are porti-potties. Spare TP is nice to have. Be aware also that you may encounter wildlife; from scrub jays to banana slugs, and from drunken Amtgarders to ticks. (Griffin adds that there are cougars. Also, deer; and I wouldn?t rule out zombies. Be prepared.) Meals at Darkshore are provided, but I recommend bringing some food with you; in case you don?t want what is being served, or a meal gets missed. You should definitely bring water and anything else you may want to drink. *[Deimos' note: Definitely bring Gatorade, Propel or some kind of electrolyte/sodium replenishing agent. There will be more fighting than you can shake a foam covered stick at]* As I said at the top, Darkshore is a blast? just be sure to bring with you everything you need! That being said, also try to pack everything as compactly as possible. If you can, share some gear with others ? make up a repair kit or first-aid kit with someone else who is going, bring some food to share with others, whatever. Be safe, stay warm, stay healthy, fight hard! -Lady Faye, the Slightly Obsessive-Compulsive *Darkshore Checklist* *I. Amtgard Gear* Weapons Class sashes and/or equipment. These are necessary to play, and you don't want to rely on someone else having spares for you. Garb ? fighting(including shirts/under armor ? MULTIPLE PAIRS), court garb *[Deimos' note: please have some form of garb for court, even if it's your regular fighting stuff. I will be eternally miffed if I call you up in front of court for an award and you're in jeans and a t-shirt. If you don't have anything, PLEASE let me know beforehand and I can bring something for you. Also, there is an AmtGarage sale on Saturday - it's an excellent opportunity to buy some good looking garb and/or gear.]* Weapon Repair Kit ? tape, spray glue, grip-tape, sewing kit Face paint *[Deimos' note: That's not a NECESSITY. Unless you like having your face painted. Then I guess it is.]* Closed-toed shoes/boots with GOOD SOLES! *[Deimos' note: To add to this, I will remove you from the field if I see anyone fighting barefoot or without closed toed shoes. This is not negotiable. Many people wear cleats and nature surprisingly does not take human comfort and safety in mind for its daily operations.]* *II. Personal Gear* PJs ? WARM layers! Change of clothing (extra socks are a really, REALLY good idea) a. Toiletries Toothbrush/toothpaste/floss Pick/brush/comb Spray bottle Deodorant (lots of it) Oxy Pads/breakout cream Q-tips Washcloth Spare toilet paper/tissues Sunscreen b. First Aid Aleve/Ibuprofen/anti-pain meds Allergy Medication (if required) Band-Aids/medical wraps (for sprains, ect) Any other medicines you may wish to take ? cold medication, Dramamine, etc. *III. Camping Gear* Tent Camping Pad or air mattress (with battery-operated pump) Sleeping Bag Extra blankets Fire-Wood Folding Chair Matches/lighter Cooking gear (if desired) *IV. Food/Drinks/ect* Cereal Trail Mix/peanuts Water Jerky (Excellent for protein replenishment) Gatorade Sodas Marshmallows If there's something you think you need and don't have it, contact me and I'll see what I have extra. Also, worst case scenario, town is 10 minute drive or so, should you find yourself short on supplies. *Absolutely Important Things to Bring and/or Know: **The admission fee for the whole weekend is $15.00 per person. This covers admission and most meals. Keeping yourself fed is your own responsibility, so make sure you plan in advance whether or not you will be partaking in the group meals. *You have the opportunity to earn up to 5 credits this weekend. You will receive 1 travel credit, plus 1 credit per day of participation. These points accrue at the rate of the 1 travel credit + 1 credit on your first day, and 1 credit each subsequent day. So Friday (2 pts, travel included), Satuday (1), Sunday (1) Monday (1). The points are accrued at the end of the day, so if you are 2 pts from a level, you will attain that level the morning after your first day. *If you are under 21 and are caught drinking, you will be asked to leave the mountain. If you are under 18, your parents will be notified immediately, and the hosts of the event reserve the right to notify the authorities. If you are over 21 and are caught providing alcohol to someone under 20 (even a sip), you will be asked the leave the mountain, you likely be banned from future Darkshore events (and risk future ban from Amtgard events altogether), and may face criminal charges. We are 100% serious on this, and there will be no exceptions, no tolerance, and no warnings. If you are caught tampering with your wristband, you're gone. In addition, as Monarch, if you are caught doing any of the above, you can pretty much kiss your future participation at our park goodbye. I don't care how your family raised you or what they allow you to do in your home, but this is both the law, and the rules set forth for this event. **If you are under 18, your parent or a responsible adult of their choosing must be present the whole weekend for you to participate. You must also have the waiver signed by your parents (not just our waiver, this is event specific). Your parent must pay the admission fee as well, and the will have the full food rights that everyone else enjoys. They can also participate in the fights and games as well!* Directions: http://www.mogdman.com/amtgard/darkshore-09-caa.pdf Waiver: http://www.mogdman.com/amtgard/darkshore-09-caa.pdf Official Darkshore Thread: http://www.caamtgard.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2480 I will be leaving Thursday night to head up to SJ. I've temporarily hi-jacked the monarch's email to bring..well...what you're reading right now. If you're not reading this, please explain how. We have a couple awards leftover from Court at Darkshore for people who were not present to receive them. And as summer vacation is creeping up, this is the best opportunity to give them out without worry about people not being there. So, here goes: *Archtos (Luke)* For making his black and green tabard, he recieves his First Order of the Garber. For making his first sword, he recieves his First Order of the Owl. For his prowess in the Westmarch April 09 Crowl Quals Tournament, he receives his First Order of the Warrior Huzzah, and thank you. *Nate Watkins* For making his green tunic w/ white trim, he recieves his First Order of the Garber For his Amtgard article and his recruitment efforts, he recieves his First Order of the Rose Huzzah, and thank you. *Qazyr (Seth)* For making his black, long sleeved fighting shirt, he recieves his Second Order of the Garber For his help and participation during the Month of March, he receives his First Order of the Zodiac For his outstanding attitude on the battlefield, he recieves his First Order of the Griffon Once per reign, we are permitted to give one award to recognize someone's outstanding efforts in the portrayal of their in-game persona and class of choice. The Monarchy agrees that for his portrayal of an Assassin, Qazyr earns his First Order of the Mask. Huzzah, and thank you. *Reptar/Wheels (Ian) *Reptar was a transplant member from the Northern Lands, who has moved back after his short time here. We appreciated his help and enthusiasm and look forward to his return. He has earned a few awards that are, in our estimation, overdue. For making his own swords, he recieves his First Order of the Owl For making his own shield, he recieves his Second Order of the Owl For making his Lorica styled plate armor, he recieves his Third Order of the Owl. For his outstanding battlefield attitude, he recieves his First Order of the Griffon For helping during our Minicon demonstration, he receives his Second Order of the Rose For helping during our Open House demonstration, voluntarily skipping on Crowl Quals to help the club, he receives his Third Order of the rose. Once per reign, we are permitted to give one award to recognize someone's persistently outstanding attitude. The Monarchy agrees that for his persistently outstanding attitude, he recieves his First Order of the Jovious. Huzzah, and thank you. Also, our current Monarch, Leah, recieved the Noble title of "Lady" at Darkshore for all her service to Amtgard, both at the local level and with Westmarch events. So thank Lady Leah for all her hard work next time you see her. If you won't be able to stop by the field and would like your awards mailed to you, let me know what address and I'll see about getting them sent out. As usual, if during the course of the reign you see someone doing something you think is noteworthy, please bring it to the attention of anyone in the Monarchy. I think that's it! Now *THAT* should be my last official act as your previous Monarch. I now return you to your regularly scheduled non-tyrannical ruler. -Dave/Deimos -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We're meeting as usual at Santa Rosa Park from 1-4 on Saturday. It should be a huge group, since I know of several extra people showing up. Don't forget, we're taking some time to make some swords during the day. We'll have materials on hand to make short swords. The materials are free to dues paid members ($6 for six months) or $6. If you've already made a sword with club materials at one of our A&S sessions, you will not be able to make another (but we will make you help us teach!). Other than that, we've got a new game to try out with your newly made swords, so we'll see you there. I've had a bunch of questions about plank-foam shields (the blue one of mine, and Lady Leah's green one). It just so happens my Knight (and good personal friend) had a source on plank foam. It has to be ordered in advance, and he intends to come down here July 11th, so he is willing to bring them down from San Jose. Price structure is as follows: 2" Laminated 2.2 density foam Small Round Core (23" diameter or less): $10.00 each Medium Round Core (24"-30" diamter): $20.00 each Large Round Core (31"-38" diamter): $40.00 each Large Rectangle Core (2'x4'): $20.00 each *Because the order has to be placed in advance, you must let me know what you want ordered and how many by June 28 (Sunday Night). * Bear in mind, these are *not* finished, ready to use shields. You will still need to attach straps or a handle, as well as make a cover. This is for the basic disk of foam only. I am more than willing to help anyone who would like advice on how to turn said disk into a working shield. Remember, you have to get back to me *this week* so I can tell him what to order. This offer should still be available in the future, but you might have to go to San Jose to pick them up, or pay to have them shipped down. You can email back to the monarch here, or to me directly at deimos at fortressofsurlitude.com Eventually, I will have Griffin enable my other account to email to the populace. I suppose I should remind him... Anyway, thanks to everyone who showed last weekend! -Dave/Deimos -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Being nice and friendly and making everyone want to come out and have fun with us. These demos have brought us some of our best and longest lasting players, so a good presence would be nice. Oh yeah, and if you're there and you're helpful during the demo, we will give you an extra credit in the class of your choice. There will surely be some ditching, a smidge of kill-your-killer, and maybe a few battle games. Next weekend there is a camping eventat Lightning Point in the Angeles National Forrest. There will probably be 50 or so people from all over California. It's about a four hour drive from San Luis, and everyone is welcome to go. If we can get someone to do sign in for SSD, there will still be a meeting at our park. Finally, back by popular demand, we should be able to throw together an A&S afternoon sometime in the month of August. I'm going to get a bigger room this time, since we seem to have so many people interested. We've also got three sewing machines lined up so far. If you have a specific date you'd like it to be on (not the 9th) let me know in the next week and I'll try to accommodate as many people as possible. See you all at the field! We're meeting at Santa Rosa park on Saturday at, you guessed it, 1pm. This weekend is the Southern Rebellion, so a few people may be there, but there will be a presence at our field. As a reminder, loaner gear, including sashes are just that - loaners. They're meant to be used on the field, and then put back into the bag-o-sashes. Please remember to bring any you may have taken home back to the field so we don't have to keep making new. We have a whole bunch missing, including Deimos and my personal sashes. Also, you're going to be expected to have your own sashes and gear by about level 2 (or somewhere in there...) so if you don't have anything yet, start asking around to find out how to make or get that gear. We've got lots of experienced people around that would be only too happy to help you outfit yourself. Prime Minister elections are coming up fast. The PM is required to be very, very organized, have access to a computer and the internets, and be very organized. Also, organizational skills are important. It's one of the most vital positions on a field, as a PM is responsible for the records. If you're interested in stepping up into a leadership role in Amtgard, this is a good one to think about. Talk to Griffin if you want more details about what it entails and what the official requirements are. We'll be having a mini iron man tournament for everyone with fewer than 36 credits (if you have more, you can reeve if you're qualified, sit out, or keep track of wins or something). The top place finisher will have his or her choice of a new t-tunic or tabard from our stock. This is really just to promote the fact that we have some available. It looks like we're going to be meeting from 1pm-5pm on 8/30 (that's next weekend) for an arts & science workshop. There will be several sewing machines and people to help you sew, as well as people who can help you with other projects you're currently working on. If you'd like to start something, but don't know what you're going to need, ask me on the field tomorrow and I'll point you to whom you need. Weather looks nice for the weekend - mid 80's and sunny. Make sure to bring sunscreen and lots of refreshments. As it will be the first of the month, there will be a mandatory weapon check before you can bring any weapon on to the field. If you arrive late, please pull me, Griffin, or Leah aside so we can check your weapon before you take the field. There is another Arts & Science day tentatively scheduled for September 20th. Mark your calendars (probably with pencil, to be safe) There will be an Althing (a meeting and a vote) after Amtgard. Check with Griffin to see if you're voting qualified. There will be votes on: *Westmarch*: http://www.caamtgard.com/docs/ballots/september-althing-09.pdf Prime Minister: Candidates are Sir Euric and Squire Laoric Awards and Honors update to Corpora Two-Man Teams change to the Corpora A modification of Article XI: Affirmations to list "Thor's Refuge" instead of "Falcon's Reach" Vote to upgrade Ashen Spire to a core land, requiring they tithe with every PM election and granting the land voting rights in Principality-wide elections Vote to admit the Shire of Eldritch Hills as a sponsored land Vote to admit the Shire of Silver Sun as a sponsored land Vote to authorize $400 from the Westmarch coffers for the midreign feast at Feast of Mars V *Local: *Vote to allow Griffin to run for Prime Minister (yet again). I think this makes 6 or so reigns straight. At some point, I really hope someone cares enough to step up and let Griffin do something else in his Amtgard career. Pending a positive outcome of item 1, the vote for Prime Minister for the next 6 months. If approved, the ballot will be Griffin vs. No Confidence. And while we're on the subject of officers, the position of Champion of Seven Sleeping Dragons is still vacant. As the Champion of Westmarch, I was asked to perform the duties on a local level until a local champion stepped up. I think it reflects best on the group to have someone from the park fill that position. In order to qualify as Pro-Tem Champion, you must: Be 18+ years of age Meet current voting requirements (Dues paid, attendance requirements, have a signed waiver on file for at least 6 months) Display a reasonable grasp of how the game is played (not necessarily know everything and can quote the rulebook) Be willing and able to check weapons and gear on a monthly basis (or more, if necessary) to make sure it meets Amtgard safety standards. Fufill the duties of Safety Officer on a local basis. Be willing to run games in the absence of planned events. A qualified candidate would be in office for the remainder of this reign (3 months). I will say this about this (and any other position in the Monarchy): You will never be left alone to fend for yourself in any of these jobs. We have people at the field with many years experience, and I know that none of them would turn someone away who was looking to try their hand at leadership. Beyond that, there are many, many people in Westmarch who would lend a hand or advice to help out. There is nothing to be intimidated about. I think Champion is not a difficult position, and is a great place to test the waters to see if leadership is your cup of tea. I would be glad to supervise and/or teach you anything I know about how to do the job. Also, as this is for 3 months, that's a great trial period to see how it fits So if you're interested in the local Champion position, please come up and talk to me, and we'll see what we can get done. Thank you for your time, and congratulations for surviving this wall of text. See you on the field Saturday. We now return you to your regularly scheduled Benevolent Monarch. -Dave/Deimos -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Here's an update/schedule for the upcoming Feast of Mars event this weekend. Please note that these are gladiatorial style games, so there will most likely not be magic, armor, bows, or classes used. It is important to bring your own gear and not assume there will be loaners available. We are anticipating upwards of 100 people attending this event. That will include the feast that night, should they choose to partake. If you show up Thursday or Friday, you will pay the full $20 fee (that's per person, of course). In addition, if any of you have friends/family who want to attend and camp out, but not participate in the games, the fees are still the same ($20 for the weekend). They are free to partake of any sponsored meals, so that's a little added bonus. If you do not like the meal selection, don't want to pack food, or didn't pack enough food, there are multiple fast food places within a couple blocks, as well as a Safeway/Vons a half mile or so away. So you're not roughing it by any stretch of the imagination. Be sure that if you arrive for Saturday only, that you arrive before 10am. Once the games are started, it's nigh impossible to add latecomers onto teams. Qazyr (Seth) has volunteered to run our normal park on Saturday for those not attending FoM. However, if there are to be loaner swords on the field, we need to arrange to give the loaner bag to someone who will be going as well. (Seth walks to the park, so I'm not going to make him carry the bag. I'm sure someone is going who has a car). Please contact us ASAP so we can arrange this. Anyhoo, that's it from me. Drop us a line if you have any questions. -Dave/Deimos -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Seth generously offered to run the field, but no one has stepped up to bring the loaner weapons. This means that you will be limited to what people bring. Also, I just received word that we will have our first SLO high demo of on October 2nd. If you would like to volunteer to be at this event, please reply to this email. We are especially looking for people with weapons, so all those energetic young kids get a chance to play. The demo runs from 5:30-6:30, though it has been know to go a half hour or so longer. Please let me know if you're interested. Hope you all have fun this weekend! We'll be meeting at Santa Rosa Park at 1pm this weekend as usual. Should be a good turnout, and we should also have plenty of weapons and other loaner gear there this week. Don't forget that it's the first weekend of the month, so we'll be doing weapon checks to make sure nothing's breaking down on your weapons. We will also be doing a charity tournament. This is an Amtgard-wide event to raise food and money for local food banks. Here's our Westmarch Champion Deimos' explanation: Terms of buy-in/rebuy: 3 cans of food or $1.00 per entry/re-buy Tournament Style: Bracketed, single elimination (w/ possibility of re-buy in the same bracket). Single short, dual short, short and board, open weapon Re-buy rules: May utilize a re-buy to re-enter the bracket they lost in (Exception: when the result of a fight would determined 1st through 3rd place in a given category). If you have multiple re-buys available and sweep a category, save them for the next category. If you sweep all the categories and have unused re-buy's...awesome! (It *is* for charity, afterall). People who lose and re-buy into that round should be placed at the bottom of the active brackets, and have the next person who re-buys as their opponent. If the round ends and the re-buy has no opponent, they receive a 'bye' into the next round. (Making it a re-bye, of sorts. Stop groaning, that was good and you know it) The land that raises the most money/cans of food for donation will receive a medium shield Relic, to be ratified by Prince Sir Keluric. Monarchs should tally the total cans of food and dollars raised, and PM that information to me (and take a picture of it with your land heraldry or something, just to show how cool you are). Doing this helps the less fortunate, and make Westmarch (and the rest of Amtgard) look good in the process. This is a win-win situation, and with the holidays coming up is a (sigh) nice thing to do. (It burns! IT BURNS!) Food banks typically prefer the dollar donation, as they can stretch it farther than the average shopper. They also like canned fruit/veggies, canned protein items (tuna, stew, chili, peanut butter, orphans), dried beans, soup, chili, pasta, rice, cereal, baby food, formula, fruit juice, and briefcases of money in small denominations in non-sequential number (unmarked bills preferred). So, everyone clean out your cupboards and get those small unmarked bills and we'll have a little fundraiser for the San Luis Food Coalition. Also, just a reminder, we're having a quest next weekend. This will not be at the same park we usually meet at (hah! told you I'd eventually stop saying Santa Rosa Park!), but will be at Meadow Park off of South Street. If you are of the sort that will need a ride, it would be best to arrange it at the field this weekend. Also, we'll be needing people to play NPC's in the quest, so speak up if you want to do that. That's all, and have a lovely evening. Lady Leah -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <1ca801c10910072148t4e3a7230g75b474811e60dc8a@mail.gmail.com> We've got a jam-packed rest of the month, so let's get started! First of all, we'll be meeting (NOT as usual) at 12pm at Meadow Parkthis week in San Luis. We will be having a quest. This means you should bring your class gear, as the whole day will basically be a long class battle. If you're playing an NPC or are Reeving, we've already talked, so you know what you need to bring. It's supposed to be comfortably warm, and Meadow Park is a little more sheltered than Santa Rosa, so it should be a nice day out. Quests are always fun, and there'll be lots of stories to hash over afterward. We also have an election coming up pretty quickly here. If you have thought about running for office, please talk to someone in the monarchy. The positions open are Baron(ess), Regent, Champion, and GMR. Please think seriously about running for office. Qualifications for Westmarch will take place on October 25th at Thor's Refuge in Sacramento. If you qualify there, you are also qualified for local office. However, since not everyone wants to travel, we will also have a qualification event here in SSD on a different date (to be determined). Regent Faye will be putting together the Arts & Science tournament, and our new Champion, Durcha will be putting together the fighting tournament. Again, please ask if you have any questions about this. That's all for now, and I'll see you all on Saturday! We'll be meeting as usual at Santa Rosa Park at 1pm. A good time shall be had by all, etc, etc.... A couple of quick things. Next Saturday is October 31st. We'll be doing a few special games for the occasion. I don't want to give away too much, but one of them has the word "goblin" in it. Bring your friends and all of you can come away with some prizes. See you on the field. That's all from me, but Regent Faye has asked me to forward this message to you all: Greetings and salutations; this is your long-errant regent speaking, and I'm here to tell you about Crown Qualifications, affectionately called "crown quals". Crown Quals will be held on November 7th at the usual park, usual time. Quals consist of both a fighting tournament and an arts and sciences competition. For those bold individuals who are running for a local office, crown quals are required to, well, qualify. However, if you are not running for office, I would still encourage you to submit any garb, crafts, or artwork relating to amtgard - it's fun to bring out your work, and it gives your future officers some competition. The tournament will also be open to all interested parties. There are several categories in an arts and sciences competition; see below: Garbing Fighting Garb - Made for wear on the battlefield Court Garb - Made for wear during Court or formal functions Monster Garb - Made for portrayal of a monster class. Garb Accessory - Belts, pouches, favors, but not jewelry. Art Flat Art - 2-D artistic medium 3-D Art - Any three dimensional artistic medium Needlework - Embroidery, latch hook, cross stitch, knitting, beadwork, etc. Jewelry - Items made to be worn as jewelry Digital Media - Photography, movies, webpages or digital enhanced art. Literature Fiction - Any fictional work Non-Fiction - Work based on factual events Battlegame - Description of a new game to play with Amtgard rules Poetry - Any type of Poetry Cooking Main Dish - Food served as a main course Side dish - Food or condiment served to accompany a meal Beverage - Any beverage and may be alcoholic Dessert - Food served primarily as a dessert Construction Weapon - Weapons legal for Amtgard use. Shield - Shields legal for Amtgard use. Armor - Any form of armor Banner - Any banner construction Active Construction - Items made for battlefield use not covered by other events Passive Construction - Items not for battlefield use and not already covered by other events Bardic Singing - Singing with or without accompaniment Instrumental Music - Any musical performance with an instrument Dance - Any form of dancing or choreographed movement Recitation - Story, poetry, comedy, drama, etc. Rose Rose - Items donated to Amtgard. If you have any questions about these categories, please feel free to e-mail myself, or ask one of the other officers at the field. If you intend to submit a written entry, please note that I will require any written entry more than one page long by October 31st. Said written entries should be e-mailed to me by that date. I am also looking for a few additional judges for the arts and sciences competition. Don't worry about lack of experience; I will be happy to point you towards helpful websites about the philosophy and rules of judging. Again, if you are interested, please e-mail me back. The relevant parts of the Westmarch corpora are shown below, or you can take a look at http://www.caamtgard.com/docs/docs/wm_corpora_09-11-09.pdf Thank you, -Regent Lady Faye ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Section 3. We're meeting at Santa Rosa Park as usual this Saturday at 1pm. Amongst our other festivities, we will be voting on our new monarchy. Running are Cronin for Baron, Wardevil for Regent, and Predator for Champion. If you are interested in the results from Crown Quals, please check out our board at www.caamtgard.com. Details are under the Seven Sleeping Dragons section. We are in the midst of our annual food drive. From now until the end of the year, for every 10 cans you bring you will be eligible for an extra credit in the class of your choosing. You may earn no more than eight credits in a month, including the ones you get for regularly attending meetings. We're coming up on end-reign and coronation (hence, the election...) and I need your help. If you have noticed anyone doing an outstanding job at anything, I need you to let myself or the monarchy know so we can discuss if awards are merited. We have a pretty big land, and although we try to keep track of things, we aren't always perfect. Plus, if we're wavering on anything, your input may put us ahead into giving out the award. To cut through a whole lot of waffle, all you need to do to unsubscribe an address from this list is to visit the following page: http://nine.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/populace On that page, enter your email address into the box at the bottom of the page. Click unsubscribe on the page that appears.
