I installed it on my MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz that runs fully updated OS X 10.5.7, and which contains a fully updated version of Office 2004. Everything went well with the installation (before starting, I'd closed all visible applications; e.g., those with visible Windows or Dock icons), but when I began running updates, the Service Pack 1 installation stopped with a "quit_apps" dialog on screen reporting "Microsoft Office 2008 Update" doesn't understand the ?event sysodisA? message The dialog offered two options: "Edit" and "OK". First time through, I clicked on "OK" and the updater appeared to run to completion. However, once I'd completed all updates and launched Entourage for the first time, it posted a dialog to the screen reporting something about Entourage Shared Items not being moved; the application opened seemingly normally. I worried that perhaps I didn't get a complete installation, so I ran the "Remove Office" application, removed Office 2008, and started over. The initial installation went fine (my product key had been retained and I didn't need to reenter it), but updates paused at the same location. This time, I clicked "Edit" in the above dialog, and Script Editor launched. I didn't see the above text in the script (perhaps that says something about why the script didn't understand the event). I Quit Script Editor, and the update then proceeded. Can anyone tell me what went wrong with my update? Is the Office installation damaged? If you're not sure you got a good clean install then a re-install may still be a good idea. The "Quit Apps" script that you mention is part of the Office 2008 installers and has made its appearance before. Normally, you shouldn't see this because its purpose it to quit any open Office applications before replacing them. However, it's not foolproof and can be problematic. Do this: Go to Apple menu --> System Preferences... --> Accounts and create a brand new Mac OS X user account where Office has never been used. Don't launch Office at all here and make sure that you are completely logged out of any other Mac OS X user accounts on your Mac. This puts you into a state where nothing in Office can be active. Run the uninstaller in this new account and then run your installer followed by updates. This should give you a clean install. Return to your regular Mac OS X user account and launch your Office applications. Hope this helps! -- bill Entourage Help Page Entourage Help Blog YouTalk Twitter: follow From dianeross at mvps.org Sat Aug 1 14:09:54 2009 From: dianeross at mvps.org (Diane Ross) Date: Sat, 01 Aug 2009 11:09:54 -0700 Subject: Installing/Updating Office 2008 In-Reply-To: Message-ID: On 8/1/09 4:07 AM, "Jim Robertson" wrote: > Everything went well with the installation (before starting, I'd closed all > visible applications; e.g., those with visible Windows or Dock icons), but > when I began running updates, the Service Pack 1 installation stopped with a > "quit_apps" dialog on screen reporting Best way is to Log Out of your User. Hi Chris! A little more than a year ago, we started YouTalk because we saw problems with uptime and availability with the Entourage-Talk list. Our goal wasn't to "take over" but rather to offer a more stable list. Jud Spencer, one of the original developers of Entourage at Microsoft, managed Entourage-Talk on one of his servers but he was having server problems frequently. That made the mailing list sporadic. Since that time I believe he has closed it. The last message I have was dated late April. Diane keeps in touch with Jud and may be able to shed more light on what has happened. -- bill Entourage Help Page Entourage Help Blog YouTalk Twitter: follow From dianeross at mvps.org Sun Aug 2 14:12:30 2009 From: dianeross at mvps.org (Diane Ross) Date: Sun, 02 Aug 2009 11:12:30 -0700 Subject: Has YouTalk replaced the Entourage-Talk mailing list? No. It used to be that quitting the Microsoft Database daemon would also quit Notifications/Reminders, but in Office 2008 it does not. Options to quit: 1. Under Entourage in the Menu bar, select Turn Off Office Reminders. 2. If the application Reminders is open, select to quit from the Dock. 3. Open Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder, sort by "microsoft", select Microsoft Office Reminders, double click to open window and select quit. (just do a normal quit, not a forced quit) 4. Also in Activity Monitor, select the Microsoft Database daemon and quit. 5. Easiest way.....Use this script to quit (download script: quit all Microsoft applications): tell application "Microsoft Database Daemon" to quit tell application "Microsoft Office Reminders" to quit >The only thing I have been quitting is Notifications. One more thing to add to logging out/in with shift key down. It's not just Microsoft applications that can cause problems. Any application that's open when you use an updater like Microsoft or Adobe can be affected. Quitting all applications leads to fewer problems. Many applications use the same underlying files in the OS. You can log out/in about as quickly as you can take the time to manually quit everything. -- Diane From dianeross at mvps.org Sun Aug 2 23:34:21 2009 From: dianeross at mvps.org (Diane Ross) Date: Sun, 02 Aug 2009 20:34:21 -0700 Subject: New Poll. I'm assuming this is the EWS beta. You should log into the Connect site and submit the log and the problem. I'm not on the beta so can't give any help, but in general if there is a problem, you can test in a new blank Identity to eliminate problems in your current database. If that fails.... To eliminate problem in your User's folder, Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. If I > don't hold down shift, it reliably crashes four seconds in. This is indicating a schedule running and a bad message either in your outbox or one trying to download is corrupt. To find the bad message, log into your account with your web browser and check the oldest messages. It's generally in the oldest ones. To test, move them out of the Inbox on the server into a holding folder. Now test downloading in Entourage. If it works, then you know the bad message is one in the holding folder. If this works you don't need to move into a new Identity. If you do decide to create a new Identity, follow the directions here: How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version) You start exporting all as .rge. If that fails, then export one item at a time as .rge. This will tell you where the corruption is located. If it's messages, run the export as MBOX files next. The script will fail on the folder with corruption. You divide the folder and manually drag the subfolder until you find the corrupt message(s). Exporting as .rge does not get categories for calendar events, notes or tasks. I use Paul Berkowitz's export-import scripts for that. Have fun. :-) -- Diane From Robert.Virzi at VerizonWireless.com Wed Aug 5 16:15:44 2009 From: Robert.Virzi at VerizonWireless.com (Virzi, Robert A) Date: Wed, 5 Aug 2009 16:15:44 -0400 Subject: Entourage shuts down In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <20090805202156.18C1E369E0@wutare.pair.com> In addition to this, you might try just holding down shift when starting Entourage. I seem to be able to use Entourage for 3-5 days and it has a total corruption. This has been going on since about May or June (and is very stressful) Per Diane's instructions I have done: *reinstall Office 2008 to be up the most current version * a rebuild, exporting all Mboxes, contacts and calendar *created a new idetity (from scratch and even on a seperate computer) *had my Hard Drive replaced and reinstalled all new software For the past month I have used Entourage on a different computer and had no issues. So 5 days ago I tranfered my Main Identiy to my machine and last night symptoms have started again: *go to contacts and while doing a search it won't find the contact *closes down and when verifying it says to rebuild *upon rebuild it bloats (from 240 mb to 290mb) *ran compact and it went down to 240 again I use sync services so that Apple Mail and iCal match up with Entourage so my iPhone is up to date. I have asked if syncing with Mobile Me might be causing issues and was told no. I have had my HD replaced and now it is happening on my machine again, was fine on the other machine for about a month. The damage seems to be in my contacts, calendar appears to be fine. Does anyone know of software that might be casuing this corruption (it appears to be that some "contacts" get corrupt. I currently do not see any corrupt contacts but that is what seems to happen. I have seen some before and painstakenly removed any "quirky" contacts. Could it be a logic board issue? I have no other issues with other programs? I love Entourage and am really resistant to moving over to Apple Mail and iCal, but am at a loss of what to do. Diane do you have any other suggestions? Logic Board? I have several ACN at a loss on what would be causing this database corruption again and again. I delete old messages from my delete folder daily and am using an IMAP account. Sorry for the long email but wanted to provide all the data I could to be clear. MacBook 10.5.7 4GB RAM most current version of Office 08 Thank you again for this great list. Personally, I don't have Entourage check for mail when it's opened. If there is something wrong I don't want Entourage trying to download mail at the same time. If I want it immediately, I can use the shortcut command-K to send & receive all. Other wise it will download at the next schedule. Open Schedules under Tools in the Menu bar. Look for "At startup" in the Send & Receive all schedule. You might want to change it to Repeating Schedule ever 10 minutes. I don't recommend trying to use every 2 minutes. Entourage will hardly be able to connect and download before it wants to fire again. -- Diane From dianeross at mvps.org Wed Aug 5 16:47:07 2009 From: dianeross at mvps.org (Diane Ross) Date: Wed, 05 Aug 2009 13:47:07 -0700 Subject: continued Database corruption In-Reply-To: <82900a960908051339y768259bfvb3459def5b046c1@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: On 8/5/09 1:39 PM, "Lorene Romero" wrote: > For the past month I have used Entourage on a different computer and had no > issues. RAM Logic board Bad drive If you have an external drive that you could boot from, this would eliminate your drive as a source of the problem. Another option would be to create a new User in System Preferences and run from that to eliminate everything in your User's folder, but it's sounding more like hardware issues to me. If it is hardware, it will eventually hit everything. Entourage is like the canary in the mine shaft. It seems to be more sensitive and is often the first application to indicate there is a problem. Do you have SuperDuper? You could create a clone of your internal drive for testing. This would give you an exact setup minus the drive. > *upon rebuild it bloats (from 240 mb to 290mb) > *ran compact and it went down to 240 again Too small to worry with stuff like this. So you see I chopped the > heck out if it and reduced the size. Check to see where you fall in the database size poll. Less than 1GB databases are 19%. The biggest group is 36% for between 1-4 GB. Remember a little extra space is not a bad thing. Think of it as padding or creating a partition just for your database. Wasted Space: The database will be left with 'wasted' space in it every time you delete something. However, this is not all bad, since the wasted space is used up with new data as it is added. This way, over a period of time (assuming that you are deleting stuff as you go) the database will probably reach an optimum size, after which the stuff you delete is roughly equal to the stuff you add, and no further growth takes place. -- Diane From dianeross at mvps.org Thu Aug 6 15:58:59 2009 From: dianeross at mvps.org (Diane Ross) Date: Thu, 06 Aug 2009 12:58:59 -0700 Subject: [ANN] Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.1 available now Message-ID: Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.1 update is live! You'll have to use some sort of intermediary. One method is to export .mbox files from Entourage, import those into Outlook Express and then import into Outlook. Have a look at these instructions . I would suggest that if you have an Exchange Server that you simply copy messages up to your server, connect with Outlook and then download them from the server. If you don't have Exchange then a free IMAP service such as Gmail will work just fine. Go to and create a free IMAP mail account. Connect Entourage to your account and copy messages up to Gmail. Then connect Outlook to the same account and copy messages down from Gmail. Have a look at these blog posts for connecting Entourage to Gmail. If the daemon is turned off, "Verify Automatically in Background" will not take place. Spotlight will index any cache files the Entourage daemon has created even if the daemon is not launched, but no new cache files will be created until the daemon is launched again. If the Microsoft Sync daemon never launches, there's no way for Entourage to sync data with Sync Services. The preferences in Entourage for Sync Services basically control 1) if this daemon app is launched and 2) where it should sync data to-from. Starting with Entourage 2008, Office Notifications are now called Office Reminders. It's not simply a name change. The Microsoft Database daemon no longer quits Reminders in Entourage 2008. Before 2008, the daemon owned telling the reminders app that there were reminders. With 2008, the daemon only owns launching the reminders app and the reminders app asks the daemon about what to show. -- Diane From Derek.Nicholls at me.com Sat Aug 8 17:04:11 2009 From: Derek.Nicholls at me.com (Derek Nicholls) Date: Sat, 08 Aug 2009 22:04:11 +0100 Subject: Entourage 2004: Internal handling of recalled messages In-Reply-To: Message-ID: I received a number of emails (4) via my IMAP account. Message-ID: <20090813172739.B19393664E@wutare.pair.com> Just got this email regarding release of the Web Services version of Entourage. For those of us using an Exchange server, this is a H U G E update. Integration is much tighter, and Entourage really does begin to show Outlook-like features (directory services work, calendars are visible in scheduling, handshaking is done properly). Well done Mac BU! http://www.microsoft.com/mac/itpros/entourage-ews.mspx I do have a question, though. As a beta user, I have to do the following to get off the beta and onto the real version: In order to install the final release, you will need to completely remove your beta build of Office 2008/Entourage, Web Services Edition, and reinstall your licensed version of Office 2008 for Mac. You?ll then need to update to SP2 and the 12.2.1 release that just recently came out. Once you are fully up-to-date, you can [install] the Entourage 2008, Web Services Edition. What do they mean by ?completely remove your beta build of Office 2008/Entourage, Web Services Edition.? Is that as simple as going in and trashing my copy of Entourage? I saved the old version as a back up, can I then just rename that Entourage and try the new install? The second part sounds like it isn?t going to be that simple, but I?m not sure I know what it is I?m being asked to do, so guidance would be appreciated. --------------------------------------------- Bob Virzi Verizon Wireless ? It will scan your drive in case you have more than one version of Office then it will take care of trashing the Office folder, the supporting add-ons (auto-updater, crash reporter, etc) and all the receipts etc. Much much cleaner job than simply trashing the Office folder manually. Look inside the Office folder, in Additional Tools. You?d need the integration of some scripting language that would make it susceptible. I don?t read anything more than pure rebranding in the name. It?s still going to be Entourage, built on stronger, more ?integratable? bases. It?ll still support IMAP and POP (if you don?t want Exchange). If you don't use Exchange you'll still get all the good Entourage features, but if you are an Exchange user you will see big improvements. There are many Entourage users that don't use Exchange. I'm one of them. Exchange support was excluded from the Office 2008 Home & Student version. When Outlook for Mac is released you'll still have that choice. Another benefit is when you do a Google search for help with email, you won't find the HBO Entourage entries. :-) I guess I'll be busy with updating the Entourage Help Page and Blog names and URLs. Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it?s your User?s folder that contains the problem. Drag a few test messages to the Shared folder. Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Open Entourage..you don't need to enter account info...cancel out Drag from Shared the test messages and open in Entourage. If they work in the new User, this indicates the problem is in the User's folder. Try this fix: Quit Entourage. Delete these files in Users/[YourUserName]/Library/Caches. Restart Entourage. com.microsoft.browserfont.cache tasmanbrowser.cache If the above does not work, check for corrupt font caches. These can easily be cleared from the system with Font Finagler. Download and run the application. First click the "Inspect Font Cache Files" button, then the "Clean Font Cache Files" button. You must then restart your Mac. Other utilities that can clear your font caches are Cocktail, FontNuke and OnyX. -- Diane From dianeross at mvps.org Tue Aug 18 18:47:41 2009 From: dianeross at mvps.org (Diane Ross) Date: Tue, 18 Aug 2009 15:47:41 -0700 Subject: Need info on EWS preferences for sent items Message-ID: A user asked the following on the Entourage newsgroup: >> in my workflow I used an outbound email rule, which moved all messages I sent >> over my Exchange account into my Exchange INBOX folder. Sorry for my delayed reply. When I got the duplicates, I went through them and removed them by hand. What a terrible chore! This happened several times, requiring the manual cleanup each time. Then I learned... I back up my iCal database every time before I do an sync. If I get the warning message ("there are [x] conflicts") there is no choice but to let the sync continue. After the faulty sync finishes, I then restore iCal from the backup, which restores the Entourage calendar inside Entourage. What a pain. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roger S. Renter the passwords from a known good password. 2) Ask your broadband supplier on what port they permit mail transmission. They may be blocking you. When you get the approved port number, change the setting: Tools -> Accounts -> Your Account Name -> SMTP Server -> Override Port [number] If they don't give you a number, try changing that port number to 587. That might work. By the way, something is way screwy in your configuration. Do your settings in Entourage match those recommended by dodo.com.au as shown here ? For both your incoming mail server and outgoing mail server, you should have all the "advanced options" unchecked. You'll find your settings in Tools --> Accounts --> . You'll find the "advanced options" by clicking the buttons beneath the server information in your settings. Are you able to set up a completely different account such as a free Hotmail account ? Helena, I am also running Entourage 2004. Yes, there are updates to Entourage 2004. You go to the menu Help -> Check for Updates. It's good to do that, but I don't think that an update is the problem. (Try it, of course.) By the way, I asked earlier if your Apple Mail.app will work with the same settings you have been using in Entourage. Does Mail.app work? It it is not working, we can guess that you have a problem with your Account settings, not necessarily with Entourage. Make sure you have your Account settings absolutely correct. The settings are likely to be different between your dialup settings and your cable modem settings. The mostly likely difference is "Override default SMTP port". I forgot to ask also, when you changed from Dialup service to cable modem, did you change your mail ID, your account ID, your password, or the servers? Make absolutely sure. If you have a wrong entry there, you will not be able to connect. If Apple Mail.app works, and if you are sure that you have the correct settings in Entourage Account, then... Why don't you try a new Identity in Entourage. It will open with none of your existing settings. First, make sure you know exactly what your ISP settings should be. I really think that you are missing something. However, it is also suspect that the change you make in your existing Entourage Account "won't stick." When you are sure that you have your ISP settings correctly, write them down exactly. Call them and ask them, one by one, what setting you need. "Do I need 'SMTP service requires secure connection'? 'Do I need "Override default SMTP port'?" Etc., one by one. When you have those settings written down for sure, make a new user Identity in Entourage. Entourage menu -> Switch Identity -> Yes -> Are you sure? -> Yes -> Create New Identity -> [use a name like "Test Identity 1"] -> OK When it opens you will see a Setup screen. Don't import anything. Use Setup to configure your new Account. Or... Go to Tools -> Accounts, and set up a new Account for your ISP. See what happens then. If it works, then it seems that you have something wrong in the Main Identity. If it does not work, and you are absolutely sure that you have the settings configured properly, then you will probably need to archive the mail from your main Identity, uninstall Entourage 2004, and make a fresh installation from your installer CDs. You may also want to post this to the Entourage mailing list. I'll make a copy of this message to the list. Best/Roger+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roger S. As a faithful reader of this list, and of Diane's posts, iKnow that the old Entourage List spit the bit. iDidn't mean the "Entourage List" Entourage list. iMeant this list. iGuess this is the YouTalk Entourage List. No worries! We had a hard time coming up with a name. Now that Entourage will get a name change it has worked out to our advantage not to have Entourage as part of the list name. Can you imagine how confusing it's going to be giving instructions after Outlook for Mac is released? It's been bad enough that they changed menus, shortcuts and names like Notifications are now Reminders. I should do a poll on what users think about the new name change and what the new features will mean. -- Diane From jstaad at ix.netcom.com Sun Aug 23 16:59:25 2009 From: jstaad at ix.netcom.com (Joel Staadecker) Date: Sun, 23 Aug 2009 21:59:25 +0100 Subject: Sync problem: Entourage and iPhone calendar - multiple entries in Entourage calendar Message-ID: MacBook Pro, 2.6 GHZ, Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4GB, Mac OS X 10.5.7, Entourage 2008 12.2.1, POP iPhone Model MB212B (first version in the UK, not the 3g version), Version 3.0 (7A341) I use Entourage and don?t use iCal, but I was advised that the only way to sync iPhone to Entourage was to sync Entourage to iCal. So my equipment, OS and software is a bit different from yours, but... ...I have had the same problem as do you. I have not found anything to prevent this problem. The problem seems to occur at random. Or, at the very least, I can't figure out what triggers the massive changes. After all, I have synced the two devices hundreds of times before, so there shouldn't be any difference in events other than a new event. The measures I have taken are: 1) Backup my iCal database every time before I do a sync. File -> Backup Database (Your menu name may be a bit different in your version of iCal.) 2) Make sure that iSync is set to "Show Data Change Alert when [any] [more than 5%] of the data on this computer will be changed." That may give you the option to stop the sync. It will certainly give you enough time to wait (don't say OK to the proposed changes), go into iCal, and do the backup immediately. You can backup iCal while that "Change Data" alert is open. Then, if the sync screws up your data, you can go back to iCal and "Restore from Backup" or "Revert to Database Backup" (the menu name varies according to the version of iCal). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roger S. Let's address the dupes first. Download one of the remove duplicate scripts available. Next, set a category to every event even if it's a generic category like "current". All dupes will have the category "none" assigned so you can sort by category "none" an delete those. Next, some users have found that only checking one items at a time to sync in Entourage preferences have helped. Since addresses don't change as often as events, leave it unchecked, then toggle the events off while you sync to your Address Book. Uncheck Address Book then check events to sync. The original statement was that categories in Entourage don't sync with categories in Exchange. They do sync with Exchange, if you're on Exchange 2007 (SP1, RU4 or later -- and SP2 was just released today with lots of improvements) and are using Entourage for Web Services. The categories icon in the toolbar, which has checkboxes, serves two purposes: a checkmark next to a category tells you that the category is applied to that item, and you can also check the box to apply that category to an item. My overall internet connection slows dramatically when Entourage WSE is open. I am running a 3.06 GHz MBP with 8 GB RAM, OSX 10.5.8 and Entourage Version 13.0.0 (090609) connected to a web hosted Exchange Server 2007 with all updates. I have DSL 6.0 megabits/sec internet connection that regularly hits 5.7 or 5.8 megabits/sec when WSE is not running but much slower when WSE is running. My browsers (either Camino or Safari) load much slower when WSE is running. Under Activity Monitor, Under Network, the Data Sent is consistently 60+ KB/sec. It seems that WSE recreated an identity so I guess it had to download all old e-mails and attachments, correct? I had a ~9 GB identity so shouldn't it be through by now? Has this slowness issue been reported before? Any suggestions? (I hope I don't have to create a new identity because that takes hours to download all mail). That?s irony for you: the Mac now has Exchange compatibility built in, but Windows itself does not.? Wow! Raises all sorts of interesting possibilities and questions. How will Ent WSE work on Snow Leopard connecting to an Exchange server? Will MS be using any of the Mac OS compatibility features in its upcoming Outlook for Mac? Will Mail and iCal really become viable competitors to Entourage/Outlook in corporate Exchange environments? --------------------------------------------- Bob Virzi The information contained in this message and any attachment may be proprietary, confidential, and privileged or subject to the work product doctrine and thus protected from disclosure. I can see though that instead of using Sync Services to sync to the system Address Book and iCal, running Snow Leopard, you could point the AB and iCal straight to the Exchange server itself, thus bypassing all the hassle of Sync Services? > > Will MS be using any of the Mac OS compatibility features in its > upcoming Outlook for Mac? > Only they could answer? While sending couple of large emails I lost internet connection and received error message saying that the mail is moved to the drafts folder. Somehow the second trial was also not successful but this time message is being disappeared instead of being moved to the drafts. Ever since, every time I connect to the exchange server I receive error message ?Could not synchronize record: xxxxx to Exchange server: xxxx?. I could not find where these messages are stored. Is it possible to delete these messages and get rid of this error message?
