Interesting little survey, James. I think one needs to distinguish
between use of such on-line presence within the context of known
employees seeking promotion, unknown applicants seeking to enter an
organization, and outliers such as China, where the sort of content and
presence being looked for is well-known and perhaps politically tinged.

I think one also has to distinguish between having one's application
put in the discard pile, ad some sort of punitive action being taken on
an existing employee.

Dennis,

This may be of interest to you and others. It's about a survey of about
20,000 individuals and one of the questions asked was "Have you ever
been rejected for a job because of comments or pictures on your
online/social media profile?"
