As an IO psychologist, former programmer/analyst, and former HR software consultant, I would recommend that if you have moderately sophisticated or sophisticated HR processes - for example, complex business or pay rules, complex approvals, competency models, well developed job descriptions to name just a few elements - then you should strongly consider purchasing best in breed modules and building interfaces between them.  If you choose to go with an 'integrated' single brand HRIS, you will make considerable sacrifices not only in $ and development time but also in business processes.  If you want your business practices to drive the software and not the other way around, best in breed is the way to go.
